Types of Flowers to gift during pride month 🌈✨

With pride month in full swing, one of the best ways to show your care and appreciation for your Queer loved ones is to gift them a floral arrangement that embraces their personality. Whether they are colorful and extravagant or demure and prefer a softer color palette. There's always an arrangement available that will make them feel special during a month that celebrates being proud of who they are! With a wide array of colors and flowers available during June, your local florist can create an arrangement as unique as your friend, lover, or chosen family.

Before you pick out a random floral arrangement you think “just looks nice”, you should consider the person you’re buying for. Here are some questions you should ask yourself: What is my loved one’s favorite color? Or what color represents them? Does my loved one prefer masculine, feminine, or gender-neutral gifts? Is there a flower or plant my loved one likes the most, and would they prefer a bouquet or vase arrangement? From personal experience, the more tailored the gift is to your dearest, the more meaningful the gift is!

However, if you’re new to buying flowers or creating arrangements, the variety of flowers available can be a little overwhelming. And with seasonal changes, there are so many blooms in season during the month of June. As a Queer Florist, I’m going to give you some recommendations that can make the process of picking flowers just a little bit easier.

Lily of the Valley

With its bell-shaped flowers and short stems gives a dainty look to any arrangement. With a classic white lily of the valley and its green stems, this flower showcases a romantic, traditional, or elegant affair.

Peony flowers in a Vase

Peony

A cute fluffy, ruffled textured flower that is the most desirable choice during this season. Peonies come in a range of color options and give off a garden style arrangement. This flower showcases platonic affection and would be best for giving to your friends or chosen family.

Hydrangea flowers in a field

Hydrangea

With big, spherical flower heads, this flower has such a versatile appeal that can work in a bouquet or a vase arrangement. Hydrangeas come in bright tones like blue, purple, pink, and white.

Dahlia floral arrangement

Dahlia

Dahlias are the most show-stopping flower June has to offer because of it’s hard to ignore beautiful shape and flawless texture. This flower can be found in vibrant and pastel colors which makes this bloom extremely versatile.

Sunflower bouquet

Sunflower

Sunflowers are classic flowers that are defined by their vivid petals and dark centers. The color of these flowers evokes feelings of happiness and whimsy. I would recommend giving this type of flower to your family, or close friends to keep them uplifted during this season of being proud of who they are.

Carnations in a vase arrangement

Carnation

Carnations are known for their cup-shaped blooms and ruffled texture. These are some of my favorite flowers to work with because they come in a variety of colors and are extremely durable. However, this type of flower gives off more of a romantic feel, second to roses.

Snapdragon bouquet

Snapdragon

Available in a range of shapes, colors, and heights this flower could be perfect for anyone. They create a trailing-like effect to your bouquet or add height to a vase arrangement but regardless of how they’re styled, they’ll give an organic wildflower feel to your floral arrangements.

Now that you know the type of flowers, the color palette, and the style of arrangement you want. It’s time to decide where you want to get the flowers from. I would suggest you do some research and find a local queer florist in your area. With you already showing your care and appreciation for your loved one, why not continue showing that admiration by supporting a queer florist! If you’re located in New York City, you can support Venusian Blooms who is a Black and Queer-owned florist that offers custom arrangements with any color palette or flower you desire.

Since pride takes place during the entirety of June there is no right or wrong time to gift someone an arrangement. But there are some key dates that you should keep in mind if you want to celebrate someone on a particular date. To start there’s the first day of June, this would be an ideal day to start the month off strong. This can get your loved one excited about the month of celebrating being out and proud! But the most important days to celebrate are June 28th which is the Stonewall Riots Anniversary. This day celebrates the importance of freedom of choice in matters of sexuality. And the next day which is June 29th. It’s NYCs biggest pride celebration. From the pride parade to the pride fest. The city is booming with festivities all day long ending June off with lively music, people, and confetti.

While there is no particular reason to give someone you love flowers any time during the year, pride month can be a lovely excuse to cherish someone just because. It’s a great way to let your queer friends, lovers, or chosen family that you support them no matter what. To the queer folk in your life, it’s important to see them as they are and be there for them through all of life’s phases. Gifting flowers that embrace the uniqueness of your dearest can make them feel loved and appreciated. So take the plunge and show your care and affection to the queer folk in your life by gifting them a flower arrangement that is tailored for them and pushes them to continually be out and proud.

Happy Pride Month Everyone!
